Are you considering oil tank removal services in New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware or Pennsylvania?
Did you know that above-ground oil tanks can leak, causing environmental contamination? Worse, your homeowner’s insurance policy does not cover the cost of cleaning up oil contamination. This out-of-pocket expense can cost a few thousand dollars to over $100,000.
Luckily, there is a way to avoid this when an issue is found with an existing tank or is simply old: above-ground tank removal. So while there are some instances where you may be able to keep an old tank, there are also situations where above-ground oil tank removal is necessary to avoid oil leaks.
When Above-Ground Tank Removal Is Necessary
There are various reasons why you may need to remove an above-ground oil tank from your property. Sometimes, the tank may be too close to your home or other buildings on the property where the tank can be omitting hazardous vapors into the air.
Oil tanks have a limited lifespan, whether used for heating purposes or storing petroleum products. As a result, tanks may become outdated or no longer up to code. Eventually, they will deteriorate and need to be replaced.
However, simply replacing an old oil tank is not enough. The old tank must be removed and disposed of properly to avoid environmental contamination and costly cleanup. So, when should an above-ground oil tank be removed in New Jersey?
The answer isn’t always straightforward, but there are some general guidelines to follow. First, it’s essential to have your oil tank professionally inspected regularly – at least every three years. During these inspections, a professional will evaluate the tank’s condition and any necessary repairs. Remove and replace will be recommended if the inspector determines that the tank is no longer safe or structurally sound.
Oil Tank Disposal & Documentation
Stewart Environmental Remediation is your best option for above-ground tank removal services. However, once removed, Stewart Environmental’s oil tank disposal method adheres to strict environmental regulations to avoid contamination of soil and water sources.
In addition, the correct documentation must be reported to finalize the status of the local permit as completed. Or to obtain an NFA (no further action) letter from the DEP if a leak caused the contamination.

What To Expect
Remove Tank Contents
We use a professional vac truck for tanks holding large amounts of liquids. We may also pump out the tank and place it into a 55-gallon drum for smaller amounts of liquids.
Remove Sludge & Clean
The solid waste oil on the bottom “sludge” cannot be pumped. The sludge is cleaned manually and placed into 55-gallon drums for disposal.
Inspection for Tank Leaks
The tank will be thoroughly inspected by the township inspector for any signs of corrosion or holes.
