Gas Station with Underground Tank Removal
We were called by a tenant operating a tire shop in Newark that wanted to purchase the building he was renting but the property had an open DEP case for many years. It had been a gas station in the 60’s a couple of underground tanks were still buried on the property and they had leaked and
The tenant had a really great relationship with the owners of the building and was protective of them as they had spent alot of money working with other various environmental companies through the years that had never completed the paperwork or the necessary removal of the remaining underground tanks and contaminated soil.
After several conversations we introduced both the tenant and owners to an LSRP we have worked with for many years and eventually they decided to hire us all to get the job done. They were receiving letters of fines that were to be enforced by the DEP and were on a clock of 90 days to get the work completed.
Once they decided to move forward with us as their contractor we applied for the permits immediately, mobbed out to the site to dig some test pits, found a 3rd tank no one knew was there and took soil samples to get approved into a facility.
The lot was very small and tight being difficult to work on. We ended up taking out almost double the amount of soil that one of the reports from a previous environmental companies the owner had worked with indicated would be necessary.
At the end of the day, part of the project was more expensive than originally anticipated, some parts were less expensive than originally anticipated and the job only went slightly over budget and well within the 90 day time frame alloted by the DEP.
Now we wait for the sample results that were taken from the excavation to come back and as long as they are under limits, this project that has dragged on for years by others will be considered complete and we were able to get it all resolved in a couple of months.
