1000 gallon underground storage tank
We were contacted by an attorney representing a buyer in the purchase of the historic Kilkenny Pub in Newark. A previous environmental study had identified a 1,000-gallon underground storage tank located beneath the sidewalk along the street. While initial soil borings taken on all four sides of the tank showed clean results, the buyer’s attorney requested full removal of the tank to eliminate any future liability for his client.
Securing Critical City Permits
Before work could begin, several permits were required, including a historical permit through the zoning office, a fire permit from the building department, and a sidewalk opening permit through the engineering office. Thanks to our extensive experience working in Newark, all permits were issued quickly—an essential factor since the buyer was locked into an interest rate and working under a strict deadline.
Safe Excavation and Tank Removal
A police officer was required on-site during the project to safely close the sidewalk and protect pedestrians. Once the concrete was jackhammered and removed, we excavated and removed the tank. Upon inspection, it was clear that the tank had failed, containing dozens—if not hundreds—of holes.
Unexpected Contamination Discovered
Soil samples were taken from the bottom and sidewalls of the excavation. One area returned elevated contamination levels, even though the original testing had come back clean. The reason this contamination was missed earlier was because it had traveled straight downward beneath the tank rather than spreading outward where the initial samples were taken.
Targeted Soil Remediation
We mobilized a second time to remove the impacted soil. Fortunately, the contaminated area was limited to just one truckload—far less than it could have been. Once additional sampling confirmed the area was clean, the excavation was backfilled.
Final Restoration and Project Completion
After all clean results were confirmed and the project was officially cleared, we returned one final time to restore the sidewalk. With that, the project was successfully completed and the buyer was able to move forward with confidence.
